Regional Organiser’s Report by Robert Albright FRPS

A Feast of Excellence

As a participatory occasion The RPS Western Region Annual Print Exhibition is the most popular event we run. This year’s entries were selected by Kevin Thomas FRPS. Kevin did an excellent job, picking about 110 images in less than two hours. This works out at one a minute, each of which included his commentary. Congratulations to the Gold Medal winner, Andy Beel FRPS and the 6 Ribbon winners. Andy’s print was one of a set taken in Ethiopia, another of which won a medal at The London Salon and a third of which was picked for our exhibition on the second pass. Ann Cook FRPS was also successful in both venues, well done to her. Please come and join us at the opening by The President of The Society, Professor Ralph Jacobson, in The Podium Library, Bath at 6.30 pm on 10 September 2007. The Gold Medal and Ribbons will be presented along with other RPS Distinctions.

The London Salon is the premier UK print exhibition outside The RPS and has been running for 96 years. It was formed as a breakaway from The Linked Ring who themselves had broken away from The RPS which they considered to be too concerned with technical and scientific issues at the expense of pictorial photography. To this day there is a tendency in The Society to value technical skill more highly than imaginative and creative work. (Discuss). However, The RPS International Print Exhibition has been operating for 150 years so it must be doing something right! It is coming to the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath, 6 October – 18 November 2007 with a private viewing on 5 October from 6 – 8pm. (Western Region Members are invited)

On 9 September there will be a fascinating Lecture by Richard Sadler FRPS-  ‘Bill Brandt & the Missing Negatives’ to be held in Fenton House, our regular meeting place. This illustrated talk is based on original research and will educate and entertain all who attend. On 14 October is the Launch of The RPS International Slide Exhibition, featuring an Open Digital section for the first time. The start is at 11am, not the usual 10am, to allow more time for people to travel from outside the Region

There is currently an exhibition of prints by Western Region RPS members who live in Bath at The Guildhall in Bath running until October 2nd  and a members exhibition runs until 14th Oct at the Royal United Hospital, Bath

On 20 October the world-renowned John Blakemore FRPS will lecture and run a workshop at the Selwyn Hall, Box, Wiltshire from 10.30 to 4.30. Tickets are available on a first come first served basis as this is expected to be a very well attended event. Tickets at £10 (£12 On The Door) and further information from Ron Morgan, ronm@blueyonder.co.uk.  See also the western Region Website www.western.rps.org
