Regional Organiser’s Report by Robert Albright FRPS
Since my last
report I managed to break my elbow on New Year’s Day and consequently missed
the AGM. I and the rest of the Committee were re-elected for 12 months. Ann
Cook FRPS, according to all the accounts I have received, gave a superb lecture
with a diverse selection of her professional photography.
A joint meeting
with The RPS Digital Imaging Wessex Group, organised
by a certain Mrs Maureen Albright ARPS and Ray Grace ARPS, featured Terry
Steeley as an Adobe Photoshop lecturer. We moved to the Selwyn Hall, Box for
this event, a decision justified by the 70 people who attended
Our next lecturer
at Fenton House on 11 May will be Christopher Morris from The RPS Contemporary
Group with a talk entitled ‘On Both Sides of the Eye’
I am pleased to say that Kevin Thomas FRPS has agreed to select the images on 13 July 2008 for our annual print exhibition. This will be formally opened by The President of The Society, Dr Barry Senior Hon. FRPS in The Podium Library, Bath at 6.30 pm on 17 November 2008. It will run in that venue until 24 November. There will be a separate showing at The Swindon Link Centre Library from 16 to 30 September 2008
The meeting
immediately prior to the selection on 8 June is your opportunity to bring and
show prints for comments and discussion. You may enter three prints for the
exhibition or a minimum of two from which a selection of one or more will be
made
Further details of
the 2008 Programme are available via our website www.western.rps.org Ron Morgan, our
Exhibition Organiser, will in due course put up the entry requirements for the
annual exhibition
The AV competition
for people under 25 years old received its first entry with 62 sequences on a
CD sent by one school. It looks as though pre-selection will be required before
the jury, whose members are coming from Russia, Luxembourg and the UK, is able
to assess the entries. The Society, through its own Council and staff and its
excellent public relations firm MAX PR and Events, has been highly supportive of this venture. It’s good to see it paying off
The Western Region
is flourishing with nearly 700 members. One reason is that The Society operates
on a much broader base than any camera club. Club members often only show their
work in a competition context and the preferences of club circuit judges tend
to encourage club members to enter images with a conservative and rule based
agenda. Thank goodness there is an open minded and adventurous society
available to us all. It’s called The Royal Photographic Society!

Ann
Cook FRPS
Ann Cook’s
presentation earlier in the year attracted what was probably a record audience.
Ann displayed a huge range of portraiture subjects and her commentaries and
humour were equally entertaining

Members’ Print
Day
We were also entertained by several members and guests at a recent print presentation meeting.
Notable among these was the highly original
prospective ‘A’ panel shown in the following photograph.
It was initially difficult to categorise the panel – more ‘but is it art?’ than
Documentary, possibly Visual Art
but not enough ‘visual’ to comment on constructively; we were on the verge of
concluding that it would have to be up to the Imaging Scientist Panel to
comment but were saved any further consternation when we realised that these
were just the backing boards to support a panel of unmounted landscape prints
