LICENTIATE DISTINCTION

I had the pleasure of being present at the Podium Bath when Julie was presented with her LRPS Distinction by the then President of the RPS John Page HonFRPS. It was there that I first heard the story of the eight successes of the Bristol Photographic Society - Ed.

A successful LRPS candidate has to present 10 images of the required standard. These may be in the form of Colour Prints, Mono Prints, slides, or even now CD. (Full details from the distinction Department - Carol Agar).

My licentiate panel consists of photos of architectural detail around Bath and Clifton Village in Bristol. I am rather helplessly drawn to the elegant ironwork in the Georgian buildings in these areas, particularly when set against the lovely pale golden stone of the buildings, with its subtle variations in colour. The challenge for me is to try to create something new and fresh by using these decorative elements in a way that they were not designed to be seen.

I gained my licentiate in 2003 after starting photography as a complete beginner only 8 months previously, thanks to the excellent teaching, support and enthusiastic encouragement of Mike Lindsay and his superb team of tutors on Bristol Photographic Society's Basic Photography course. Thanks to their help, eight of us from the course gained our licentiate's together, with a 100% success rate. The annual course begins in September and runs every Tuesday evening for 12 weeks. The classes are fun and sociable, and include optional field trips. For details, see www.photobps.org
