NEW REGIONAL ORGANISER FOR WESTERN REGION
Many of you will already know that Robert Albright FRPS has taken up the role of Regional Organiser following Ray Grace’s resignation. Ray’s contribution was significant over the two years he was our RO and members will no doubt want to express their thanks along with those of the committee for his dedicated service.
We wish Ray all success in his new role of Marketing Manager for Fotospeed. We know he is already snowed under with work but that he will not be too busy to join us at meetings!

HAPPY NEW PHOTOGRAPHIC YEAR
FROM ROBERT ALBRIGHT FRPS
Welcome to the latest RPS Western Region Newsletter. I have been elected as your Regional Organiser for 2005. Many thanks to my predecessor, Ray Grace, for his contribution to the Region and to him and the committee for a very well executed handover. |
This means that, out of a total membership of 600 we could easily grow by 50% and still only meet 10% of you. ; That’s what I call growth potential!
We have decided to stay at Fenton House for now as one of the few RPS groups able to make practical use of the building. |

I took up photography in 1977 with the purchase of a Canon AE1 and joined the Ford Motor Company Camera Club. When I moved to Wiltshire in 1982 I became enthused with the expressive capability of Audio Visual work. I am interested in literature and music as well as visual matters, so there was a perfect fit.
When my early collaborator, Bernard Harvey, moved to Northumberland I had to learn the techniques of sound recording and mixing. In 2002 I was awarded my Fellowship in Slide Sound Sequences, possibly the last to use slides. Most recent Applications employ digital projection. Modern software programmes make construction of AV’s much quicker and more flexible than with analogue procedures.
In the end, though, it is the creative and expressive abilities that distinguish work, not technical proficiency. As a member of the AV Distinctions Panel I look for invention and imagination as much as applied skills.
For the last 4 years I have entered prints in the London Salon of Photography and had acceptances in 3 of the Exhibitions. The origins of the London Salon go back almost as far as the RPS and the mutual influence has been artistically and historically important.
The Western Region Programme for 2005 is shown overleaf. Several interesting lecturers have been invited and we are awaiting their responses.

We meet on the second Sunday every month
10am at RPS HQ, Fenton House, Bath.
The building is modern, well equipped and free for our use, an important consideration.
We usually see 30 to 40 members. |
IMAGES FOR THE WEB SITE
Maureen Albright is courageously taking over the running of the web site and invites any member to provide images for display on the site. Please select 6 images together with a ‘head and shoulders’ of yourself plus a short biography and send them to maureen@maureenalbright.com
Images posted to the web site should be JPEG files not exceeding a file size of 200K. Larger images sent will take some time to upload on the new site so Maureen will resize as necessary. The longest side of any image should not exceed 500 pixels.
File names should be in the form name .jpg. If members have their own photographic web sites please send the full web address so we can also add a link from the new gallery.

What was this gentleman thinking after he had viewed the Ilse Bing
‘Queen of the Leica’ portraits in the V & A Photography Gallery ?
With 600 RPS members in the Western Region, the response to this should be overwhelming.

BITS AND PIECES
Members who rarely venture over the border between north and south i.e the M4 corridor, will be pleased to hear that the National Museum of Photography Film and Television in Bradford is negotiating to present a permanent exhibition of some of its three million images in London. The NMPFT will give London what it has lacked, its own photography museum. We should have no difficulty in remembering where to go to see the exhibits, whenever the plans materialise; the London centre for photography and the digital arts will be in Somerset House.
